Statistics Training

We learned today that the statistics portion of the program is being removed in the future. This is a huge mistake. In CS, especially for research, we need more of this type of training not less. This is important because research is showing how truly weak our skills are:

This decision should be reconsidered.

I agree completely. Any kind of experimental work is going to need at least some basic statistical analysis and if the work involves only a few runs (typical with human subjects) you are going to need a pretty good understanding of stats to get legitimate results.

Holy crap, removing statistics is a big mistake. If anything, I was hoping more statistics would be added and maybe even probability theory. Lots of very interesting and very useful stuff there particularly for research.

Kristal,

Congratulations on your graduation. I find that the information on statistics is very helpful.
thanks

Howard.

I agree. That's a really bad sign. I think this program needs more foundational course like statistics. Does anyone know the rationale for removing this course?

*grins* Hot off the press: next year's course offerings include Experimental Design and Statistical Analysis, Quantitative Methods and Qualitative Methods (three classes that assist with the analysis of doctoral research).

Your feedback, hard at work... *smiles*
